Highland Public Works – Waterworks

HIGHLAND WATERWORKS

Highland residents and businesses have the benefit of living near Lake Michigan, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. An agreement negotiated between the Highland Water Works Board of Directors and the city of Hammond provides millions of gallons of potable water to Highland each day.

Members of the Water Works Board of Directors, who are appointed by the Town Council, are responsible for assessing fees to recoup the cost of treating and transporting fresh water. Residents and businesses are billed monthly for water, waste water treatment based on water usage and solid waste collection.

Highland Water Rate Notice

Rates are going up for all Highland water customers beginning in February.

The entirety of the increase in the cost of water will be paid to the city of Hammond water utility, which provides water to Highland, Munster, Griffith, Whiting and Dyer. Highland residents will begin paying $2.16 per 1,000 gallons of water  — an increase of 55 cents per 1,000 gallons effective with the bills mailed in February. If not for legal action by Highland and the other customer communities, Highland residents would have been charged $3.21 per 1,000 gallons — or an additional $1.05 per 1,000 gallons. In addition to achieving savings for residents going forward, the water department absorbed the Hammond rate hike for the entirety of 2021.
