Highland Business - Master Plan

HIGHLAND MASTER PLAN

The town Master Plan details how the community looks today and how it should exist in the future. The document contains diagrams, maps, aerial photos, reports and data that support the vision.

In theory and in practice, the Master Plan is a living document. It is never completely finished but is considered a work in progress. In that way, it changes with the community and the towns and cities that surround us. For example, the Riverfront Development District was created after neighboring Hammond razed the Highlands Apartments and set their sites on creating a hospitality area of their own just across the Little Calumet River. The synergy with the hotels that are already there and the establishments that are being built complement Highland’s new use for the property.

In addition, Highland’s Master Plan addresses:

  • Transportation and traffic
  • Community facilities
  • Green space and parks
  • Neighborhoods
  • Development
  • Land use

Architectural Design Standards

The Redevelopment Area’s Architectural and Design Standards and Guidelines were approved by the Town Council on October 12, 2009. The Redevelopment Commission believes that these standards and guidelines will enhance the Redevelopment Area and provide guidance to property owners and developers. INFO: For assistance with these standards, please contact Redevelopment Director Maria Becerra at (219) 972-7598 or email [email protected].
