Highland Police Department – Bike Path Safety

BIKE PATH SAFETY

Since an on-demand crossing light was installed on 45th Street at the bike trail, pedestrians, bikeriders and skateboarders have never been safer.

The non-traditional traffic lighting system – known as a Hawk Beacon – is just one of the safeguards in place to keep trails and paths throughout town worry-free.

The most prominent safety feature involves police officers who patrol off-road paths on bikes, using an All-Terrain Vehicle when necessary to provide rescues.

As seasons change and residents spend more time outdoors, Highland Police do, too. Summer patrols begin on Memorial Day and continue through Labor Day. Officers on the summer detail focus on neighborhoods and community policing, enforcing speed limits and stop sign compliance while spending time outdoors, meeting up with residents in the parks, downtown and on the bike paths.

“Our officers look forward to spending time with residents,” Chief Pete Hojnicki said. “It’s important people get to know us while we are getting to know them. This is community policing at its finest.”

Officers will again deploy the department’s four-wheel drive vehicle to gain access where regular patrol vehicles cannot reach.

“We love our residents and want them to enjoy their summer safely,” Hojnicki said. “These officers are there to enhance quality of life for everyone.”
