Wetlands are areas where water covers soil most or all of the time. Water saturation determines how soil develops and the types of plants and species of animals that call that area home. Wetlands, which provide habitat for thousands of species of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals, are valuable for flood protection, water quality improvement, recreation and aesthetics.
Highland’s Heron Rookery is a local wetland that is home to snowy white egrets, blue herons, bald eagles, dozens of varieties of nesting birds and waterfowl.
