MS4 Watershed

Highland Watershed Information

The counties of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall, Starke, Jasper, Newton and Benton counties make up the Kankakee/Iroquois River watershed, an area of land that drains water into a specific body of water.

Highland has three waterways that comprise a fraction of the Kankakee/Iroquois River watershed. These waterways act as major receptacles for stormwater and snow melt – Cady Marsh Ditch, which runs east to west into Hart Ditch, which straddles the Highland/Munster border. The waters of Hart Ditch move north into the Little Calumet River. The Little Calumet was the scene of more than 40 years of construction and remediation as part of a flood-control project. Completed in 2020, the project cost $2.3 million.
