Highland’s Traffic Safety Commission is made up of elected and appointed officials along with the heads of the fire, police and public works departments. Their function is to identify hazardous intersections, improper speed limits and other factors that impede traffic flow in order to devise solutions.
For example, members of the Traffic Safety Commission identified a hazardous intersection along Main Street at Highland Grove shopping center. The site of several accidents, the commission realized something needed to be done to improve traffic safety. Initially, the commission ordered that a concrete median be installed to restrict left turns. When a new shopping plaza was nearing completion, Highland and Schererville worked together to install a traffic signal at the intersection and the median was removed.
