The School Resource Officer Program is an integral part of community policing that stresses the importance of a positive working relationship between police and the school community. The positive working relationship along with a safe learning environment cultivates a climate where students can excel.
When Cpl. Rick Hoffman’s two children go back to school in August, the veteran Highland police officer goes back to school with them.
Cpl. Hoffman has been the Highland School Resource Officer since July 2017.
The School Town of Highland and the Civil Town of Highland have been in partnership with the very important position of School Resource Officer for more than 20 years.
As SRO, Hoffman is the first line of defense in case of a police emergency. The part of his job that commands the lion's share of his time is creating relationships and mentoring students to develop healthy behaviors and even healthier relationships with law enforcement.
Hoffman is nationally certified to teach Gang Resistance and Education Training, which he uses as part of his work in the town’s high school, middle school and four elementary schools.
