A LOOK BACK

HIGHLAND'S FALLEN OFFICERS

Officer Donald R. Sheppard - November 12, 1971

It was just before 10 a.m. Officer Sheppard was making what he thought would be a routine traffic stop when he was shot and killed by a prisoner who had escaped from the Michigan City prison just hours earlier.

Maurice Barnes was wounded by another Highland officer and taken into custody. Barnes, who had been convicted of rape, was tried and sentenced to life in prison.

A five-year veteran of the Highland police force, Sheppard was survived by a wife and three children. Following the incident, a park was dedicated and a monument erected to honor Officer Sheppard.

Officer Robert J Markley- March 10, 1978

It was an frigid morning – just after 2 a.m. – Officer Markley was directing traffic along Indianapolis Boulevard when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Officer Markley had been summoned to the scene to assist in traffic control while a hijacked truck was being removed from a snow bank. The suspect was apprehended but later found not guilty of reckless homicide.

A member of the Highland Police Department for four years, Officer Markley was survived by a wife and infant son. A park was dedicated and a monument erected to honor Officer Markley.

Seems a lot has changed in the last 30 years. The uniforms, hairstyles, even the size and make of the cars is markedly different when four of Highland’s finest posed for this photo. Pictured from left: Officers Al Fletcher, Dennis Mcfarlane, Doug Shaginaw and Tim Towasnicki.
